Read full description of the books Chesterton on Shakespeare:Mr. Ahlquist has here scoured thousands of Chesterton's essays and newspaper columns and compiled those essays and paragraphs, in which Chesterton discusses Shakespeare, into this delightful little book. If you love Shakespeare's plays then you should be able to take great pleasure in the fact that Chesterton not only loved them, but wrote about them frequently and enthusiastically. His exuberant and paradoxical writing style works well in discussing plays like Hamlet, Macbeth or A Midsummer Night's Dream. Unlike other Shakespearean scholars, Chesterton also strongly draws out the affinity that Shakespeare had for the common man and lower classes of Elizabethan England. Most enjoyable of all, Chesterton then contrasts the morals and philosophy of Shakespeare with the "morals" and "philosophy" of the modern age. The contrast makes us moderns look weak, feeble and dull.
Read information about the authorGilbert Keith Chesterton (1874-1936) was born in London, educated at St. Paul’s, and went to art school at University College London. In 1900, he was asked to contribute a few magazine articles on art criticism, and went on to become one of the most prolific writers of all time. He wrote a hundred books, contributions to 200 more, hundreds of poems, including the epic Ballad of the White Horse, five plays, five novels, and some two hundred short stories, including a popular series featuring the priest-detective, Father Brown. In spite of his literary accomplishments, he considered himself primarily a journalist. He wrote over 4000 newspaper essays, including 30 years worth of weekly columns for the Illustrated London News, and 13 years of weekly columns for the Daily News. He also edited his own newspaper, G.K.’s Weekly.
Chesterton was equally at ease with literary and social criticism, history, politics, economics, philosophy, and theology.
